Chabads Offer Six-Week Winter Course Called ‘The Dilemma’

Chabad of West Orange and Anshei Lubavitch of Fair Lawn are offering a new six-week, six-session course from the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI) called “The Dilemma: Modern Conundrums. Talmudic Debates. Your Solutions.” Classes held at Chabad of West Orange, 401 Pleasant Valley Way, West Orange, New Jersey, will be taught by Rabbi Mendy Kasowitz, beginning on Monday, January 30, at 7:30 p.m. Classes at Anshei Lubavitch of Fair Lawn, 10-10 Plaza Road, will be delivered by Rabbi Bergstein and will begin on Sunday, January 29. The cost, textbook included, is $85 per person or $150 for a couple.

“In ‘The Dilemma’ we encounter fascinating, real-life conundrums—situations in which your gut instinctively responds one way, but your brain tells you quite the opposite,” explained Rabbi Zalman Abraham of JLI’s Brooklyn, New York, headquarters. “To solve these dilemmas, participants are asked to break into study groups and explore hair-splitting Talmudic arguments that participants then debate and apply to solve the cases using new, interactive polling technology.”

‘The Dilemma’ is accredited in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania for continuing legal education credits for attorneys and others in the legal professions. The course offers the opportunity for its students to discuss and debate over different moral and realistic dilemmas from a Talmudic lens. One example of a discussion involves the Pokemon Go mobile app and whether or not the creators of the game should be held responsible for the cases of trespassing and other damages that resulted from people chasing the virtual Pokemon characters located on private property.
