Teaneck Library Gala Kicks Off Annual Book Sale Season

The annual gala of the Friends of the Teaneck Public Library will take place on Sunday afternoon, May 7, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Hilda Lipkin Auditorium at the library. The event is open to the public at no charge.

The program kicks off the annual “Book Sale Season” at the library. The volunteer, non-profit group The Friends of the Teaneck Public Library has conducted a used-book sale for more than 30 years, to promote appreciation and awareness of the library, and to raise funds for popular activities there including concerts, film series, summer reading programs for children and more. The sale is one of the largest in the area, with thousands of books donated every year and sold for low prices. Folks come from all over Bergen County and beyond to shop at the book sale, and it’s popular with book dealers, too. The Friends use money raised at the book sale to fund activities that aren’t covered by the town budget. The Teaneck Public Library is one of more than 70 libraries in the Northern NJ area that make up BCCLS – the cooperative library system that enables residents of any town to check out materials from any member library.

The Friends group has hundreds of members who pay $15 annual dues to support the Library and keep the programs going. One of the benefits of membership is that Friends are allowed to shop early at the book sale. Anyone interested in the Friends or the book sale can find out more by visiting the library, and new members are welcome to join at the door by paying their first-year dues at the special preview sale days.

This year’s gala event features a concert by pianist Igor Lovchinski, hailed by Gramophone Magazine as a “star of the future” and acclaimed by Germany’s Piano Magazine for the “elegance and rapturous beauty” of his playing.

After Sunday’s kickoff event, books for the sale will be collected from Monday, May 8, through Sunday, May 14. Gently used or new books, DVDs and CDs will be accepted. Drop-off times will be Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Thursday, May 18, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and Friday, May 19, from 9 a.m. to noon will be special preview sale days for members of Friends of the Teaneck Public Library only. Not a member? You can join at the door—$15 annual dues.

The regular sale days will be Sunday, May 21, through Tuesday, May 23. Remember to visit the sale early. The sale room is closed at least one hour before the library closes for the day. The sale will be open to the public.
