Teaneck Community Band Puts on Summer Concert Series

This summer marks the 73rd annual Teaneck Community Band Summer Concert Series. The five-part concert series began on July 5 and the final concert will be on Wednesday, August 2. The band is made up of over 100 volunteer musicians from all over Teaneck, ranging in age from 15 to past 70. The band plays pieces from a variety of genres including classical, pop, Broadway and movie music and traditional marches, and usually draws a crowd of 300-400 people.

Evan Cooper, the band’s conductor and music director, has been the conductor for 19 years, and played in the band in the 1960s. His says what makes this program special is “the opportunity for volunteer musicians of all ages, all levels of experience to get together to make music.”

The final concert will feature marches including the New York Hippodrome March, symphonic dances from “Fiddler on the Roof,” a march called “Flight” from the Air and Space Museum at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, and a musical interpretation of “Around the World in 80 Days.” Featured soloists, percussionist Jeff Sagurton and flutist Stephanie Pizza, will also perform a duet variation of “Carnival of Venice.”

The event is sponsored by a grant from The Puffin Foundation, Ltd., The Township of Teaneck and the Recreation Department.

The August 2 concert will take place at 8:00 p.m. at the Votee Park Rotary Bandshell on Palisade Avenue in Teaneck. The rain site will be Thomas Jefferson Middle School.
