LPS Holds First-Ever Spelling Bee

“Tali! Tali!” could be heard on the streets of Tenafly last Friday in an attempt to drown out the equally raucous shouts of “Isaac! Isaac!” being screamed by the other half of the Lubavitch on the Palisades School.

A week of preparation, anticipation, and competition culminated in a championship showdown on Friday to determine the school champion in the-ever annual LPS Spelling Bee.

The National Scripps Spelling Bee words became the task for Shavuot week. The daunting list was tackled by the middle schoolers in earnest and the field was whittled down in a grueling competition that left Isaac Cohen standing as the sixth grade champion and Tali Rovner as the champion representing the seventh grade.

Both anticipation and volume built steadily during the championships, as the two champions tackled their words for a grueling nine round battle of attrition that saw Rovner prevail.

The school champions were both congratulatory of their opponent and left smiling, awash in the applause of their peers and armed with their respective prizes (a toy drone for the second place finisher; a Fire Tablet for the school champion).

The competition was a rousing success and the younger grades, this year a captive audience though not yet participants, voiced an earnest interest and desire to participate in future events.

The Spelling Bee has arrived at LPS and it appears to be around to stay.
