Yeshiva University Men’s Tennis Finishes a Terrific Year With NCAA Loss

The Yeshiva University men’s tennis team concluded its historical 2017 season with a loss in the second round of the NCAA tournament to nationally ranked No. 8 Amherst College, 5-0, at the Amherst College Tennis Courts on Friday morning. The Maccabees are now eliminated from the NCAA tournament, while the Purple & White (Amherst) will play the Ephs of Williams College in the regional final on Saturday.

“Great season— we competed well today. I am really proud of our players,” Yeshiva Head Coach Jon Rubinstein said. “Amherst is a top-10 team in the country with tremendous depth.”

The Purple & White (23-5) won all three doubles flights and took both completed singles contests to clinch a spot in the third round of the NCAA tournament.

Senior David Papis Elon and sophomore Mikey Ozery won four games in the second doubles flight. The team of sophomore Adam Rosemblaum and freshman Lior Brik won two games at the #1 doubles position, while the duo of senior Eitan Rudansky and freshman Avidan Rudansky won just as many games in the third flight.

In singles, Ozery claimed two games in the second set of the third position. Papis Elon won three games in the first set and had a 1-0 lead in the second, but the #1 singles match went unfinished. At the #2 position, Rosemblaum won three games in the first set and had a 5-1 advantage in the second, but the match could not be completed due to Amherst clinching the team victory.

It was still a successful season for the Maccabees (16-2). Yeshiva won its fourth straight Skyline Conference tournament championship and earned a victory in the NCAA tournament, the second in Yeshiva Athletics history. For his singles career, Papis Elon went 37-2 and went undefeated against Division III opponents.
