New Poll Shows Drop in Support for Two-State Solution

(JNS.org) Researchers have found a drop in support for a two-state solution among both the Israeli and Palestinian populations.

Lead researchers Dr. Dahlia Scheindlin and Dr. Khalil Shikaki Tuesday revealed the results of a survey, conducted in June and early July, which included interviews with 1,200 Palestinians and 900 Israelis. According to the poll, 53 percent of Israelis and 52 percent of Palestinians support a two-state solution. The numbers represent a drop from a similar poll conducted in 2010, which found that 71 percent of Israelis and 57 percent of Palestinians supported two states.

The new poll also found that 71 percent of Palestinians and 72 percent of Israelis do not believe a Palestinian state will be created within the next five years.

Scheindlin and Shikaki told reporters at Jerusalem’s American Colony Hotel that the poll results could be deemed discouraging, but that Israeli and Palestinian leaders can help reverse the trend.

“We show why [support for the peace process] is declining and going in the wrong way. We are saying there is another reality. Dig deeper, you can find things,” said Shikaki, The Jerusalem Post reported.
