Chinuch Recruitment Week: A Different Kind of Matchmaking

(Courtesy of Azrieli Graduate School) The Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education and Administration is working to solve an important problem: how to match Jewish educators with the many schools and institutions that want to offer inspired Jewish education. To address the challenge, the Azrieli Graduate School (AGS) is offering an array of opportunities during its upcoming Chinuch Recruitment Week.

On Monday, Feb. 24, an event called Chinuch Speed Meeting will allow for Jewish education employers and those considering careers in the field to meet. Over a dozen schools and other employers will host tables at the event, welcoming small groups of YU undergraduate and graduate students, alumni, and others for brief presentations. Every few minutes a bell will ring and participants will then rotate to a new table, maximizing their exposure to prospective employers, which will include schools in the metropolitan area and Jewish communities across North America. Recruitment opportunities will continue throughout the week with employers visiting Yeshiva University’s Wilf campus for interviews and informational sessions, with over 10 schools and programs currently scheduled to participate.

When asked why Azrieli is sponsoring the week’s events, Dr. Rona Novick, dean of the Azrieli Graduate School, replied, “We receive so many requests from schools to send them qualified and quality Jewish educators. We want to help our students have amazing careers, and we want to help schools find extraordinary educators. The need is enormous, and I only wish we had hundreds more entering the field of Jewish education.”

In preparation for the events, AGS offered two free webinars: a panel discussion on teacher recruitment and retention innovations for school leaders, and a presentation about resume writing and interviewing for job seekers. All students, job seekers and employers are encouraged to post resumes or job advertisements on JedJobs.org—the Jewish education jobs website. AGS regularly lists job opportunities in its monthly Spotlight email, and in preparation for Chinuch Recruitment Week, published information on the various upcoming recruitment opportunities.

AGS is one of the largest degree-granting programs preparing Jewish educators and leaders for Jewish educational settings. It offers a variety of programs for a master’s degree in Jewish education, including joint BA/MS programs that allow undergraduates the chance to begin their master’s degree in their undergraduate senior year, joint programs with the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary and the Bernard Revel School of Jewish Studies, and a fully online master’s degree accessible to students worldwide. AGS also offers a one-year master’s in constructivist approaches in Jewish education. Over 30 students graduate annually from AGS and accept teaching or related positions in Jewish day schools, agencies, synagogues and other settings, and counts more than 800 alumni over the past 18 years, teaching and working in programs from New York to California, South America, South Africa, Canada and Israel. In addition, AGS offers a doctoral degree in Jewish educational leadership and innovation, preparing leaders to serve as principals, heads of school and other administrative roles.
