Swapping a Suit Jacket for a Sweater

(Credit: Karako Suits)

The temperature is slowly falling, and summer suits are getting swapped out for the winter ones. Now different types of clothing options open up, and one of the biggest trends you’ll see when the temperature dips is sweaters and sweater vests replacing a suit jacket. If you’re thinking about changing your wardrobe up as well, here are a few important tips to keep in mind:

Tuck in Your Shirt

Before we even talk about the actual item of clothing, we need to lay out some style ground rules: tuck in your shirt. Yes, some men can pull off untucked shirts underneath the sweater, but you have a much higher chance of looking really sloppy rather than finding a new level of personal style. Dress up, not down.

Get a Fit That’s Close
to the Body

With the sweater, the fit matters more than ever, and having one that’s too big or too small can drastically impact your outfit, making you look shabby and unkempt. It should easily slide over your button-down shirt, and fit tight enough so there aren’t any fabric bubbles/folds when you stand.

At the Job, Keep the Colors Neutral

If your job forces you to dress conservatively, then make sure your sweater is a solid color. A dark blue or light gray usually works well and pairs with many button ups. In addition, it’s a good rule of thumb that the sweater should be a darker color than your shirt, unless they’re completely opposite colors (i.e., pink and blue).

Go With a V-neck for a Conservative Office

A V-neck is a classic look that also lets you still show off a tie nicely, and is generally accepted at most conservative offices as a winter alternative to the full suit. If you’re working somewhere with a more open dress code, a cardigan can also pair nicely with your outfit and still looks stylish enough to wear out on the town later.
