Moriah Celebrates Second Hachnasat Sefer Torah of the Year

It is not often that a school is able to celebrate a hachnasat sefer Torah, but two in one school year is unheard of! On Monday June 3, Moriah hosted the Sable-Wolf-Kaye family Torah dedication. Moriah parents Tanya and Darren Wolf, and the entire extended family, were in attendance for the simcha. Each grade in Moriah took turns to witness the final touches in completing the sefer Torah. After all the letters were done, sixth grader Henry Wolf carried the Torah through the halls of Moriah and out the front door where the entire school and the rest of the sifrei Torah were waiting to welcome the new Torah. Song and dance filled the air as everyone got into the simcha spirit.

The Torah was then brought to its new home in the Moriah beit knesset. Head of School Rabbi Alter addressed the students with some divrei Torah, followed by Henry’s grandfather and Tanya’s father David Sable who told the story of the Torah. He said the Torah was written by a sofer in Tzfat who was part of a group of sofrim who are also musicians. He then went on to speak about the theme of the Torah—“v’chol mi sheoskim b’ztarchei tzibur b’emuna—all those who are involved of the needs of the community.” This tied perfectly into the family history. He told the story of his father, Rabbi Jack Sable who was a chaplain in the American Army and went on to become a founding member of the Riverdale community—and the story of his father in law, the famous Yehuda Avner who served as an advisor to many Israeli prime ministers and wrote the best-selling book “The Prime Ministers.” Moriah would like to extend a sincere mazal tov to the Sable, Wolf and Kaye Families. The schools looks forward to hosting the sefer Torah for many years to come.
