Varsity Storm Edges Cougars in an Overtime Thriller

After three relatively easy wins to open the season, the TABC Storm Varsity Soccer Team played a very competitive game against an experienced and very physical Frisch Cougars. Early in the game TABC tried to build up pressure with lot of smart ball movement, but Frisch defended calmly, forcing TABC into long shots and not giving up any easy chances. Frisch relied on quick counter-attacks, but TABC also played a disciplined game, not allowing any odd men rushes. In the first half TABC twice took the lead, with Ehud Adler opening the score, but both times Frisch was able to equalize. After 30 minutes of play the score stood at 2-2.

The second half was more of the same, with TABC mostly on the attack and Frisch going on lightning fast counter-attacks. Both teams played very organized defense, and both goalies made several hard saves. Twice again TABC was able to take the lead on goals from Dov Muller, but both times Frisch scored quick equalizers.

Midway through the fourth quarter Frisch began to dominate the play and had several excellent chances. TABC goalie Michael Feuerstein had to make brilliant saves to keep the game tied. At the end of regulation play the score remained tied at 4-4.

Both teams played a cautious game in overtime, with TABC getting slightly better chances. With just under a minute to go in overtime, TABC’s assistant captain, Ehud Adler, received the ball on the left side of the box, cut across the field, and despite pressure from two Frisch defenders and a very sharp angle, unleashed a powerful shot in the top right corner of the Frisch goal. The Frisch goalie was able to get his fingers on the ball, but could not stop the ball from going into the net! 5-4—game over!

With the winning goal, the entire TABC team rushed onto the floor to celebrate a hard-fought victory. Half-way through the season, the TABC Varsity Soccer Team has a perfect 4-0 record. Next up is a rematch with Frisch, followed by two games with the always dangerous Kushner Cobras (who lost to Frisch in overtime 4-5)..
