On the heels of a successful first summer, Camp Overtime provided its campers with another jam-packed week of hockey, fun and more! The vision of the program is to offer serious and fun hockey leagues and clinics, all within a positive and religious environment. The campers spend an amazing week at the beautiful Camp Mesorah campus. Hailing from across the tristate area, some of the local school represented were RYNJ, Noam, He’Atid, Yavneh, TABC and Frisch. The week included nine regular season games for each team in addition to the playoffs. Each team in the single division, for boys entering fifth-seventh grade, participated in daily clinics which focused on improving each camper’s fundamental hockey skills. Each coach in the double division, for boys entering eighth-10th grade, ran daily practices for his team which honed in on the specific needs of that team. In addition to the clinics run by the Overtime staff, Camp Overtime was privileged to host Coach Norm Blumenthal, the recently retired, legendary TABC JV hockey coach. Coach Norm ran his own style of clinics and practice. His main message to the campers was that they need to concentrate on the mental aspect of the game just as much as the actual playing of the game. This combination creates a champion.

The success of the program can be contributed, in part, to the amazing collection of staff members that served as coaches to the campers. The campers were exposed to coaches who possessed great talents on the court, but more importantly off of it. This was enhanced by the daily learning sessions that each coach led with his team. Each learning session focused on a different character trait, such as anger, responsibility and commitment, that is challenged when playing sports. The coaches discussed ways in which those traits could be improved.

Aside from leagues and clinics, Camp Overtime ran a number of fun and exciting activities which included: hockey skills competitions, various non-hockey tournaments (KanJam, Spikeball, volleyball, dodgeball), swimming and, of course, had a fully-stocked canteen. This summer’s giveaway was a Camp Overtime klipped kippa which many of the campers wore throughout camp. Camp Overtime is already gearing up for summer 2020!
