Fairleigh Dickinson University has a new women’s basketball coach, Angelika Szumilo, or just coach Ang. As the former associate head coach at Fordham University, she comes with winning credentials that should match the success of FDU coach Greg Herenda’s men’s basketball program, which won its first ever NCAA tournament game last year.
In order to introduce the FDU women Knights to the Teaneck and North Jersey jewish community, coach Ang, assistant coach Meg Cunningham and the women’s basketball team will be hosting a FREE youth clinic on Sunday November 17, from 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. in the Rothman Center, 100 University Plaza Dr., Hackensack. All female basketball players, seventh grade and below, and their coaches are invited to come to the clinic. In addition, all parents are invited to bring their daughters to the clinic, as well, to work on improving their basketball skills.
Players will be trained in key areas of the game including technical, tactical and physical. The goal of the clinic is to grow interest in the game of basketball for those in the Jewish community.
Special gifts will be given to all participants in the clinic and the girls should come in sneakers ready to run and play.
All participants will be given vouchers to attend future FDU women basketball games as guests of coach Ang. In addition, if any team would like to play a game at half time of an FDU women’s game, please speak with coach Ang or coach Meg to arrange a mutually convenient date.
A special feature of the clinic is the charity, tzedakah, component. Orli Scharf has been raising money for United Hatzalah in Israel for her bat mitzvah. One may donate money to United Hatzalah in Israel and receive an orange wrist band as part of Orli’s bat mitzvah campaign. The FDU Women’s basketball team is participating in the Orli’s United Hatzalah fundraising campaign.
All local yeshiva elementary schools and the MGBL girls’ division have been invited to the FDU girl’s youth clinic. Come with your friends, have fun and learn a lot about basketball and FDU women’s basketball.
