JEC Basketball Has Big Night as Middle School Raises Division Banner

On Wednesday night, October 30, three JEC basketball teams enjoyed big nights before a raucous crowd in the Wilf Gymnasium, on the JEC home court.

The tip off was the Middle School team against JFS, of Staten Island. At half time of this game, the JEC community celebrated the unveiling of a banner for the undefeated, division-winning 2018-19 JEC Thunder.

In the game, the Middle School Thunder dominated from tip to final buzzer, and won the game 66-21. JEC featured balanced scoring, as the entire squad played.

This was a back and forth affair between the evenly-matched teams. The game was tied at 46 in the fourth period with 3.6 seconds to play. JEC had the ball on an inbounds play under its basket. JEC inbounded the ball, the shot missed, but Elisha Joyandeh snared the offensive rebound, and put it up and in for a winning bucket, just as the buzzer sounded and the red lights surrounding the basket went off. The crowd, watching this exciting game stormed the court as if it were a playoff win.

Leading the scoring for the JEC JV was Evan Krul (14), Akiva Hess (10), Yosef Heller (10), Hillel Muehlgay (seven) and tip-in winner Joyandeh (four).

In the finale of the triple header, the YDE JV/varsity Thunder of Brooklyn played the JEC Thunder (yes, the same name) in an exciting warm-up to the regular season.

The JEC varsity Thunder defeated the visiting YDE Thunder in the night cap of a triple header, by a 54-39 score. JEC won all three games for a highly successful night.

JEC led 19-11 at the end of the first period off a dominating performance of 11 points by junior captain, Ethan Thurm.

By half time, JEC built a 33-20 lead and carried that lead for the rest of the game.

Every JEC player contributed significant minutes. Thurm ended up with 20 points and 18 rebounds. Senior captain Hillel Glick tallied 12, with 11 rebounds. Junior Josh Krause scored seven points to go with eight steals and deflections.

Juniors Eli Krul (trey) and Benny Gluck (two) contributed their first varsity points.
