The Jewish Link of New Jersey and The RAIN on Water Event Space would like to recognize 12-year-old David Weisbrot as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. The seventh grader at the Yavneh Academy thrilled the crowd with a game winning steal on December 17. The Yavneh Redhawks were down one with less than 20 seconds to play. Weisbrot came up with a huge steal and then found an open teammate who converted for the go ahead basket. A spectator told the JLNJ, “If anyone deserves to be recognized as Sportstar of the week it should be David because he saved the game and had the winning assist.”

David, congratulations on the game changing play and good luck to you and the Redhawks in the upcoming playoffs. Who is your role model and why? My role model is my older brother Benny Weisbrot because he gave me my love for sports and played basketball and football with me when I was young which made me a better player.

What is your favorite sport?

My favorite sport to play is basketball and my favorite sport to watch is football.

What is your greatest sports accomplishment?

My greatest sports accomplishment happened a few weeks ago in my Yavneh Academy basketball game. With 15 seconds left, and down by 1, ASHAR was dribbling the ball up the court to end the game. I stole the ball from their point guard and ran down the court, faked the shot and passed it to Jared Reich who scored the winning basket. The fans and my teammates all cheered and ran to high five me.

What is your earliest sports memory?

My earliest sports memory is getting on to the big screen in the Dallas Cowboys stadium when I was 5 years old.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

My favorite athlete is Jamal Adams on the New York Jets because even when the Jets are losing or winning games that don’t help in making the playoffs, he still fires up his team and stadium and shows great sportsmanship!

What is your favorite sports memory?

My favorite sports memory was the Yankees winning the ALCS game that I was at.

What is your pregame routine?

My pregame routine is watching friends and eating chicken nuggets and three avocado rolls.

What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?

When I’m not playing sports I am playing Madden 20 or NBA2k19 on my Xbox.

What is your weirdest sports memory?

My weirdest sports memory was at Yankee Stadium during this year’s ALCS game when two men were fighting and one of the guys fell on my head.

What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?

The best thing about being a Sportstar is knowing that people think I am good at playing the sports that I love.
